A GOUROCK restaurant owner has hailed the region’s ‘top quality food’ after triumphing at a national awards ceremony.
My Kitchen in Gourock has been crowned Casual Restaurant of the Year at the Scottish Hospitality Awards, the latest in a string of gongs for the venue.
Owner and classically trained chef Sushil Kc told the TV that the victory proved that locals don’t have to look outside of Inverclyde for good food.
Sushil has worked in the hospitality industry for decades, holding senior positions at high-end chains like Marriott and Crowne Plaza.
Since opening its Kempock Place location in 2016, My Kitchen has won a succession of awards, with other honors from The Food Awards and TripAdvisor.
The veteran cook said Inverclyde restaurants that continue to win national awards demonstrate the quality of local cuisine.
He said: “It feels good to have won.
“When we win awards, we feel like we’re helping the region through our food.
“I came to this area in 2014, first opened a tapas restaurant in Greenock, then moved here to make comfort food for everyone.
“We had a tough time with Covid but now we’re rebuilding things.
“It’s not a prize for us, it’s for the people of Gourock and Inverclyde who helped us win.”
The restaurateur says the anonymous judging process for the awards has kept him and his staff on their toes for months.
He added: “I was quite nervous, we didn’t know when they were going to come in.
“Even though we’ve won awards before, I still didn’t expect it.
“I’m really proud of my team and my restaurant.
“I try to hire young locals when I can because we should all be doing our part for the region when we can.
“Helping this community is what is important.
“It’s about being proud of Inverclyde, there are lots of great restaurants with top quality food here and we’re happy to be part of them.
“Winning this award will be good for everyone here as it shows that Inverclyde food is as good as other places.”
