Downtown Montgomery restaurant recovers after vandalism and theft

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Bibb Street Pizza Company in downtown Montgomery is recovering after being vandalized and robbed on Thursday.

Restaurant owner Ian Walters said the incident happened around 4 a.m. on August 4. Walters said the thief climbed onto the roof of their building and broke in through a window. The thief then tried to break through the restaurant’s ceiling, Walters recalled.

Walters said the thief stole a few hundred dollars from their ledger, but caused even more damages. He said there were about nine holes made in the ceiling and the walls.

Montgomery police said they arrived at the scene around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning. The MPD reports that no suspects are in custody and that the investigation is ongoing. The company has several security cameras inside, which should help with the investigation.

Walters said he was just glad no one was hurt.

“Obviously money was taken, but I don’t feel like we were robbed, more like we were vandalized,” he said. “Obviously there’s the money they got, but nobody got held up, nobody got hurt, nobody witnessed it. So that’s where I think we were really lucky, just like a company.

With the help of a contractor, Walters said they were able to fix the holes in the roof and walls in time to be open for dinner on the day of the incident. Bibb Street continues to be open for business. They warn other business owners in the area to be on the lookout for the person responsible.

“It’s just something that happened. It’s not even really a setback. We’re here, our doors are open,” Walters said.
